Oscar Pistorius: Why Didn’t He Wake Girlfriend?

<P>Before the trial even began, everyone knew <a href="http://www.webpronews.com/oscar-pistorius-trial-starts-not-guilty-plea-given-2014-03">Oscar Pistorius’s side of the story</A>: He was a man in fear of his life.</P><P>The athlete known as “Blade Runner” could not get way from the paranoid belief that his life was in danger, saying that he was convinced an intruder had somehow gotten into his home.</P><P>The 27-year-old found himself in his bathroom with his gun and preparing for the worst. When the person tried to get in, Pistorius fired multiple times through the bathroom door.</P><P>It was only after the fact that he realized there was no intruder, and the person he’d fatally shot was in fact his girlfriend Reeva Steenkamp.</P><P>The death of 29-year-old Steenkamp by this account was not an act of cold blooded murder, but instead a tragic and entirely unintended accident. </P><P>While this may seem a plausible enough defense, the prosecution has produced an indirect challenge to this supposed series of events <a href="http://www.cnn.com/2014/03/10/world/africa/oscar-pistorius-trial/?hpt=zite_zite4_featured">in the form of a testimony</A> by Pistorius’s ex-girlfriend Samantha Taylor.</P><BLOCKQUOTE lang=en class=twitter-tweet readability="10"><P>Pistorius ex: He cheated, he yelled, he always had his gun <a href="http://t.co/Gtahwc1rSg">http://t.co/Gtahwc1rSg</A></P><P>— Jane Velez-Mitchell (@jvelezmitchell) <a href="https://twitter.com/jvelezmitchell/statuses/441964867822428160">March 7, 2014</A></P></BLOCKQUOTE><BLOCKQUOTE lang=en class=twitter-tweet readability="8"><P>Oscar Pistorius is physically sick during his murder trial as he hears evidence from a post- mortem examination on his girlfriend's body.</P><P>— NigeriaNewsBeat (@NigeriaNewsBeat) <a href="https://twitter.com/NigeriaNewsBeat/statuses/443028621591322625">March 10, 2014</A></P></BLOCKQUOTE><P>Taylor testified on Friday that the two of them broke up after he cheated on her with the deceased Steenkamp.</P><P>More importantly, Taylor testified that Pistorius would awaken her whenever he feared that someone was trying to break in.</P><P>She shared one incident where Pistorius had supposedly heard someone banging against the bathroom window. Taylor testified that he had woken her up to ask if she heard the noise as well. She said that he took a gun to the bathroom to check things out.</P><P>Whenever there was such a situation as far as Taylor knew, Pistorius would wake her up</EM>.</P><P>This raises a very interesting question: Why did Pistorius deviate from this apparent pattern of behavior with Steenkamp?</P><P>Pistorius claimed that he understood Steenkamp to be in bed sleeping, which is what led to him mistaking her for the intruder.</P><P>With others testifying to hearing gunshots, screams, and physical evidence to come, one may be tempted to overlook this bit of testimony. Oscar Pistorius Trial Halted Over Media Leak

<P>The already tumultuous Oscar Pistorius case saw the drama level rise even higher, and just two days into the internationally-monitored trial.</P><P>Judge Thokozile Masipa ordered an investigation on Tuesday into how the first witness’s name leaked to the public despite a court order.</P><P>The witness whom we now know as Michelle Burger was a neighbor that had testified during the first day of the trial that she heard screaming and gunshots. Burger had requested that her identity not be shared by media outlets with the public in an attempt to maintain her privacy.</P><P>South African television station eNCA had shared an audio of her testimony in addition to a photograph identifying Burger by name as the witness testifying.</P><P>The act was in blatant violation of a court order that the demanded the media respect the privacy of all</EM> witnesses who request that their identities remain anonymous.</P><P>Masipa called the violation “disturbing” and warned members of the media to respect the requests of witnesses who have asked that their images and identity not be shared publicly.</P><BLOCKQUOTE lang=en class=twitter-tweet readability="9"><P>With the rate they're delaying verdict of Pistorius' trial, it's a race to see if Leo DiCaprio or a South African prison gets an Oscar first</P><P>— Gabe (@gabriursa) March 4, 2014</P></BLOCKQUOTE><BLOCKQUOTE lang=en class=twitter-tweet readability="9"><P>It's amazing how long this Oscar Pistorius trial has gone on for, surely he either shot her or he didn't.</P><P>— Lloyd. (@LloydTellis) March 4, 2014</P></BLOCKQUOTE><P>The interruption came thirty minutes into the second day of the trial, as Pistorius lawyer Barry Roux was cross-examining Burger. Prosecutor Gerrie Nel announced to the court that he had been made aware that Burger’s identity had been broadcast by eNCA.</P><P>According to Nel, the station had asked the court if they could run an image of the witness. Despite being flat out denied their request, the station went with the story anyway.</P><P>Masipa adjourned the proceedings and met with both the prosecution and defense in chambers. When they returned, she said that there would be an investigation into the media leak. She also made it clear the media members present that no photographs of witnesses who desire privacy were to be shown.
